DEMOCRACY THREATENED
DEMOCRACY IN PERIL
As the United States approaches its 250th anniversary, we should be celebrating the enduring strength of our democracy, built on free and fair elections, the rule of law, and equal opportunity for all. From thirteen colonies to a global leader, America has long stood as a beacon of democratic values and a defender of freedom around the world.
Today, those values are under direct threat.
In the wake of the 2020 election, efforts to overturn the will of the people escalated into an unprecedented assault on our democratic system. The January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol was not an isolated incident by President Trump and many of his far-right MAGA accomplices. It was the culmination of a coordinated attempt to disrupt the peaceful transfer of power, a cornerstone of American democracy. Dozens of failed legal challenges confirmed what courts across the nation made clear: the election was free, fair, and legitimate.
Now, President Trump and the same forces are advancing a broader agenda to weaken the foundations of our democracy. Implementation of plans such as Project 2025 are slashing critical investments in public education, healthcare, environmental protection, and economic opportunity, programs that help working families, seniors, and vulnerable communities thrive. At the same time, efforts to dismantle diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives threaten to roll back decades of progress toward a more just and inclusive society.
Equally alarming are new proposals to restrict voting rights under the guise of “election integrity.” Measures like the SAVE Act risk making it harder for millions of Americans, especially women, seniors, students, and communities of color, to exercise their fundamental right to vote. Meanwhile, aggressive redistricting efforts continue to manipulate electoral maps for partisan gain, undermining fair representation.
In April 2026, the Florida Legislature approved a new mid-decade congressional redistricting plan (HB 1D/SB 2C) led by Governor Ron DeSantis. Passed along strict party lines, the map is designed to strengthen Republican control by targeting Democratic-held districts, with the goal of expanding the state’s U.S. House delegation from a 20–8 Republican advantage to 24–4. Critics argue the plan violates the Florida Constitution, but it was advanced nonetheless to secure a political edge ahead of the pivotal 2026 elections, even as legal challenges are anticipated.
Conclusion: A Call to Action
This is a defining moment for our nation. The future of American democracy is not guaranteed; it depends on us. We must stand together to protect voting rights, defend the rule of law, and ensure that every voice is heard.
Democrats believe in a simple but powerful idea: democracy works best when it works for everyone. That means expanding, not restricting, access to the ballot, investing in our communities, and upholding the principles that have guided this nation for nearly 250 years.

Hyperbole or Reality?
Project 2025, developed by the Heritage Foundation with input from advisers connected to Donald Trump’s administrations, is a detailed plan to reshape the federal government. Published in 2023 as the Mandate for Leadership, it outlines a comprehensive strategy to expand presidential power to an authoritarian presidency and fundamentally alter the balance among the three branches of government. Several of the plan’s creators and supporters are in key positions in Trump’s second administration.
Supporters describe it as a reform of the federal bureaucracy they say is unaccountable and mostly liberal. Critics argue it represents a direct challenge to democratic checks and balances. Important provisions of the plan are already being implemented through the following major core pillars:
Policy Agenda
- The plan advances a “unitary executive” theory, giving the president expanded control over federal agencies, including independent and regulatory bodies. These include restructuring immigration policy, reducing the scope of federal agencies such as the Departments of Education and Commerce, rolling back environmental regulations, and reshaping the roles of the Department of Justice and FBI. Additional proposals address social policy, healthcare, and civil rights protections.
- This initiative has been substantially implemented although recent court cases have frozen executive orders calling foe elimination of many agencies, their budgets and staff. Current standoff concerns the dismissal of the Chair of the Federal Reserve
- It reclassifies tens of thousands of federal employees as political appointees, making them easier to remove.
- This initiative has been substantially implemented with thousands of employees having been dismissed during the last year
- It calls for major reductions in programs such as Medicaid, Medicare, and other elements of the social safety net. Also calls for cuts to reproductive freedoms.
- Major cuts have been made to Medicaid, the Affordable Care Act, SNAP and other healthcare programs focused on aiding low-income, children, handicapped and senior citizens
- Provides for major cuts to reproductive freedom legislation and programs including access to contraceptive medicines and abortion clinics
- It ends diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programs while having the DOJ prosecute anti-white racism. – substantially implemented
- The project recommends mass deportation of illegal immigrants – substantially implemented
Conclusion
Project 2025 has proven that it is a structured and actionable roadmap for governing that is being implemented with its goals also mirrored in many GOP governed states.
