Why Run?

by Charles Work

I believe deeply that 2026 is a moment of real opportunity for Democrats in Collier County—and across Florida. You can feel it. Voters are ready for something better, and a Blue Wave is building.

In 2024, I had the honor of running as the Democratic candidate for Florida House District 81, covering most of Naples west of I-75 and Marco Island. My wife, Roni, and I went into it with open hearts and a willingness to listen. What we found was a community full of thoughtful, caring people who are hungry for leadership that puts common sense and compassion ahead of chaos.

Running for office was hard work—but it was also incredibly rewarding. We met neighbors we never would have known otherwise. We spoke at community gatherings, knocked on doors, and had honest conversations about the future of our state. And throughout it all, we felt the steady support of local Democratic organizations and volunteers who showed up again and again.

We knew from the start that District 81 would be a tough race. It is a strongly Republican district, and we did not win. But I want to be very clear about this: the campaign mattered. Every vote mattered. A strong Democratic showing here helps move the needle statewide and strengthens the effort to elect Democrats up and down the ballot—including our next Governor.

What might surprise you is this: running a credible campaign in District 81 is doable. The fundraising is not overwhelming, and you are not alone. There is guidance, infrastructure, and a community ready to support you.

I would run again in a heartbeat. But at 85, and with an upcoming move out of the area, it’s time for the next generation of leadership to step forward.

If you’ve ever felt frustrated by what’s happening in Florida… if you’ve ever thought, someone should do something… I hope you’ll consider this your invitation.

If you—or someone you know—are ready to explore running for office, please reach out to the Collier County Democratic Party. There are experienced, committed people ready and willing to help you understand the process, build a campaign, and take that first step.

I ran because I love this community. Now I’m asking you to consider doing the same.
