As we mourn the passing of one of the most effective Supreme Court Justices in history, we remember Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s work as critically important to the way many Americans are able to live their lives in freedom.
Before Ginsburg started her important work, gender roles were institutionalized. Hundreds of federal laws discriminated on the basis of sex restricting the ability of women to secure mortgages and credit cards, for instance, and in education, employment, reproductive rights, loans, house rentals, and the military.
Most legal scholars at the time believed the law should treat women differently to “protect” them. Ginsburg saw this not only as condescending but unconstitutional.
She blazed a path for equality for women; indeed, she was a staunch defender of everyone’s civil liberties, including men. She used her immense talent to do her work to the best of her ability.
But Donald Trump and Mitch McConnell now are trying to erase that legacy. They are plotting to replace Justice Ginsburg less than two months from the presidential election.
However, in 2016 McConnell refused to consider a Supreme Court nomination by President Obama when the election was more than nine months away. We need to put a halt to this hypocrisy.
The freedoms we have won through Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s hard work and determination can just as easily be reversed with the appointment of Supreme Court justice bent on returning the country to a place of liberty and justice for the privileged few.
Her legacy is in our hands now and we must work to protect it because when we succeed in that, we succeed in sustaining liberty and justice for all.
Democrats, ALL of us, enjoy more freedoms because of her legacy and ALL of us have a role to play in keeping that legacy alive. We must fight to win every Democratic seat we can – from the White House – to the State House – to the County Commission.
Don’t forget, the road to the White House goes through Florida – where our victories are razor thin. If we can pick up 100 or 200 or 1000 or 10,000 more votes for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris in ruby red Collier County, we make victory in November ever more possible.
