DESCRIPTION:  \nJoin the National John Lewis Day of Action – “Good Trouble Lives On” \n On Thursday\, July 17\, Naples will join communities across the country for “Good Trouble Lives On”—a national day of action to honor the legacy of Congressman John Lewis and push back against growing attacks on our democracy and our civil rights. \nHere in Naples\, Florida\, we’ll gather at the Collier County Courthouse for a rally and short march to the streets. The event will feature local speakers\, voter registration\, volunteer sign-ups\, and a food drive supporting our local food bank (food donations can be dropped off starting at 6:00 PM). \nThis event is hosted by 50501 Collier County and co-hosted by F.R.E.E. Indivisible SWFL. \nTogether\, we’ll raise our voices to demand a democracy where everyone—Black\, Brown\, white\, immigrant\, Indigenous\, LGBTQ+\, and working people—can be heard and live with dignity. \nWhy Now? \nTwelve years after the Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act in Shelby County v. Holder\, we are witnessing one of the most aggressive rollbacks of civil rights in decades. Laws are being passed that restrict voting\, criminalize protest\, slash healthcare\, and target Black\, Brown\, immigrant\, and LGBTQ+ communities. \nCongressman John Lewis reminded us that we don’t wait for permission to fight injustice. Kelley is the Chair of the Miami-Dade County Democratic Executive Committee and a passionate advocate for democracy\, justice\, and immigrant rights. She is the founder of LFK Immigration PA\, a comprehensive boutique immigration law firm based in Doral\, Florida\, and has more than a decade of experience practicing immigration law. Laura previously served as Chair of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) South Florida Chapter and as Vice-Chair of AILA National’s Wellness Committee. She will review the history of LWV and discuss the actions the League has taken in the more recent past\, including legal action by the Florida and US Leagues. \nMs. Moore has been a member of the League of Women Voters of Collier County for over 10 years. She has been on the Board of LWVCC since 2020\, served as Vice President of LWVCC from 2021-22\, and as President of LWVCC from 2022-25. She currently chairs both the Governance Committee and the Speakers Bureau. In addition\, Preston Moore served as a past Chairs of the Education Committee and of the Canvassing Board Subcommittee of Voter Services. \nDiane received her Bachelor of Science in 1987 and her J.D. in 1996\, both from the College of William & Mary. She practiced in the Washington\, D.C. office of Whiteford\, Taylor & Preston for 5 years. The decisions made now will determine the fate of this species\, as well as our wetlands\, public lands\, and the Florida Wildlife Corridor. Learn more about the Conservancy of Southwest Florida’s efforts and how we can all fight to protect our green spaces and quality of life. \nAmber Crooks is the Senior Environmental Policy Advisor for the Conservancy of Southwest Florida who specializes in wildlife policy and water resource policy. As an advocate with the Conservancy since 2007\, Amber has also worked on oil drilling issues\, environmental lands acquisition\, and permitting review of proposed development\, transportation\, mining\, and other projects within the southwest Florida area. Amber has served as the Chair for the United States Fish and Wildlife Service’s Panther Recovery Implementation Team Transportation Subteam.
