Of the myriad ways the Trump Administration has shown how unprepared it was for the coronavirus crisis, the one that came to light yesterday, which should anger voters to their core, is that thousands of ventilators from the federal stockpile are not working.
The contract, maintained by the government to service the stockpile and ensure they are in good working order, lapsed and was not renewed last summer by the Trump Administration.
As reported in The New York Times on March 22, the Department of Health and Human Services ran a series of simulations last year code-named Crimson Contagion in which the different departments and state governments participated in handling a simulated national pandemic. The report that came from
So, at the same time that Trump was receiving a report about the threat to United States from a pandemic, his administration failed to maintain the national stockpile of ventilators.
The Crimson Contagion Report specifically mentions that the nation would see a shortage of ventilators. This is negligence of the highest order.
That was not the only time the Trump Administration was warned about the threat of a global pandemic. The Obama Administration also warned the Trump team during the transition.
“In 2016, the Obama administration produced a comprehensive report on the lessons learned by the government from battling Ebola. In January 2017, outgoing Obama administration officials ran an extensive exercise on responding to a pandemic for incoming senior officials of the Trump administration.” March 22, 2020 – NYtimes.com
After that warning from Obama officials, the Trump Administration proceeded to cut funds from the Centers for Disease Control and eliminate the Pandemic Response Team.
Trump failed to learn an old lesson: If you fail to prepare, prepare to fail.
The tragic reality is that Americans across the country are dying because his failure.
Trump is responsible for how unprepared this country is for this pandemic. He is in charge of the U.S. Government and all of its resources and personnel. It is unacceptable that we are this unprepared given all of the warnings over the last two years.
Trump ignored all of the warnings; voters need to pay attention to all of his failings.
