Fear of filling out the census documents is palpable within Florida House District 80 despite the fact that confidentiality of census data is guaranteed by law.
As I talk to people it is clear that not everyone welcomes the chance to be counted in this year’s census. Immokalee social service agency workers have worked tirelessly to educate and encourage residents to step up and be counted. Among some there is a visceral mistrust of our government and what will be done with the information collected.
The census count is so critical to both legislative representation and allocation of funding for public services like hospitals, clinics, schools, roads, bridges and emergency response programs. And yet there are 10 tracts in Collier County that have less than a 35 percent response rate!
Residents should be able to fill out confidential census material without fear. Government officeholders on all levels need to restore a bond of trust.
Three other Democratic women candidates joined me in a You Tube video to urge residents to stand up and be counted!
