The Florida Democratic Party state convention is October 11-13.
The convention is the party’s biggest event of the year and an incredible opportunity for Democrats around Florida to come together and get revved up for the 2020 election! All Democrats are encouraged to attend.
Each county is eligible to send elected delegates to the convention so they may vote, on behalf of their county, on the state party’s platform and any resolutions that may be adopted. Delegates also vote on which presidential candidates are nominated to appear on the ballot of the Presidential Preference Primary in March! This is a great opportunity to be part of the decision making process at the State Level.
Who can be a delegate?
In addition to automatic delegates (elected officials, chair of the local party vice-chair, state Committeewoman, state committeeman), Collier County has been allocated 18 delegates. Of those, 75 percent (14) are allotted for DEC members; 25 percent (4) for non-DEC members. Each delegation must be balanced by gender to the extent possible.
All delegates must be registered Democrats in the State of Florida. Any registered Democrat may run for a delegate position in the county, where registered. All interested candidates are required to file with their County Chair, Vice Chair, State Committeeman, or State Committeewoman by August 9th at 4pm.
How do I file to be a delegate?
The delegate filing form must be fully completed, including the Loyalty Oath section (*the only exception is for representatives of organizations not able to make partisan endorsements). Please bring this form to Collier County Democratic Party Headquarters (600 Goodlette-Frank Road, Suite 110. Naples, FL 34102) and ask that it be placed in Party Chair Annisa Karim’s mail box. It is your responsibility to make sure the form is completely filled out. All forms must be submitted to headquarters by August 9 at 4 p.m.
Alternatively, Annisa’s holding “Office Hours with the Chair” on August 5 from 5 p.m. – 6 p.m. at headquarters and you can bring your form then.
Collier County Democratic Party Headquarters is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
When is the election for delegates?
The election to select our Collier County Delegation will be held on Thursday, August 29 at 6:30 p.m. at Collier County Democratic Party Headquarters. You do not have to be present to be elected. However, once elected, a delegate shall submit a non-refundable $45 registration fee (or $25 student registration fee) made payable to the Florida Democratic Party. If you would like to be a delegate and cannot be present for the election, you must make arrangements for payment ahead of time.
Who gets to vote for delegates?
Per the Charter and Bylaws of the Florida Democratic Party, only members of the County DEC, or their proxy, shall vote.
Delegates will be responsible for their own lodging (expected to be about $220 per night on-site – less expensive options exists off-site), transportation, and meals. There is typically a gala event on Saturday night which has an additional ticket cost if you would like to attend. I certainly hope you will consider attending the convention as a delegate.
