When this country started hearing a decade ago about Dreamers — people who came to the United States as small children without legal permission — many of them were in their teens or early 20s. These Dreamers are now full adults and many have spent years anxiously wondering whether they would be thrown out of the only country they’ve really known.
Thursday’s Supreme Court ruling, which barred President Trump from deporting the Dreamers anytime soon, came as a tremendous relief to them.
Here’s what Annisa Karim, chair of the Collier County Democratic Party, had to say about the decision:
“Arbitrary and capricious,” two words that should never be used to describe the manner in which any governing body operates. Yet, the Supreme Court of the United States carefully selected these words to illustrate the random and thoughtless way in which the Trump administration operates.
In delivering a huge defeat to the Trump Administration, the court’s ruling upheld the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, for now, granting a respite to over 650,000 immigrants brought to the country as undocumented minors.
Trump’s cruel and reckless attempts to deport the “DREAMers” shows a total disregard for the process and laws of this land. Today, the United States of America benefits from these amazing young people working in our communities as healthcare workers, lawyers, teachers, small business owners, and community leaders.
